The Meaning Behind the Black Tortoise & Snake

Known in Japan as Genbu, the Black Tortoise is traditionally depicted together with a snake and is one of the legendary Four Symbols of East Asian mythology.

The tortoise represents longevity, endurance and stability, while the entwined snake adds a sense of adaptability and transformation. Together, they form a powerful guardian symbol associated with protection, resilience and the strength to endure.
